What to See on a Cultural Tour of Sao Paulo?

By

Most avant-garde city in Brazil and a vibrant melting pot of cultures, Sao Paulo is one of the top destinations to visit in Latin America's largest country. If you are a history and culture buff, and would like to learn about the fascinating Brazilian people, their colorful past, and their extraordinary joyfulness, make to take a cultural or urban tour of the metropolis. Here are some of the things you should not miss on your Sao Paulo vacation.
Although not the capital of Brazil (which is Brasilia) and not as famous as bustling Rio de Janeiro, internationally known for its exuberant Carnival, Sao Paulo is the main economic center in the country, and as such, home to plethora of thriving communities and cultural attractions. This is the most cosmopolitan, with Brazil's largest middle class and highest number of schools and universities.
Start your tour on Avenida Paulista, one of the city's most exciting avenues. Home to many financial institutions, it is often known as the city's business district. However, it is also the cultural birthplace of Sao Paulo, and you'll see a number of beautiful architectural gems, museums, theatres and more. Make sure to check out the impressive MASP, Sao Paulo's Art Museum, amazingly set on top of two gigantic columns, a work of the national architect Lina Bo Bardi. The museum holds a spectacular collection of classic works, as well as temporary exhibits from contemporary artists from all over the world.
Another interesting sight on Avenida Paulista is the Conjuncto Nacional, a building dating back to 1952, housing various restaurants, cafés, galleries and bookshops. The most famous is the Fasana restaurant, where international figures are known to have performed, including Marlene Dietrich and Nat King Cole.
Continue on Paulista and stop at the Itau Cultural Center, a must see on any cultural tour of Sao Paulo. It is located in the splendid triangular shaped SESC building. Make sure to check the center's cultural program, as it regularly hosts events, including music and dance performances.
To complete your cultural experience in Sao Paulo, make sure to take an urban tour of the city's most stunning architectural sights. Among the town's many treasures, you'll find the impressive Sé Cathedral with its striking stained glass windows. Continue on to the Church of the Ordem Terceira do Carmo, founded in the 17th century and former principal church in the city. Finally, check the founding site of Sao Paulo, the famous Patio do Colegio, where Jesuits established the first village. One of the buildings has been turned into a museum and is worth a visit.
